Endometriosis is a common cause of chronic pelvic pain and infertility. This disease affects one out of 10 women of reproductive age and is the cause of infertility for three of every 10 women. In the United States, approximately 5 million women are affected by endometriosis.

What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is the growth of uterine tissue outside of the uterus. Pain occurs when this tissue responds to certain hormones that cause inflammation and pain. Symptoms of endometriosis are often present during the reproductive years, and for many women, it goes undiagnosed for 10 years.

What causes endometriosis?

Doctors do not fully understand the exact cause of endometriosis. However, it is thought to occur due to a combination of factors, such as:

  • Growth of embryonic cells – during development, embryonic cells become endometrial tissue.
  • Retrograde menstruation – menstrual blood is supported in the fallopian tubes and pelvis, is called retrograde menstruation.
  • With surgical scarring, endometrial cells is fastened to a surgical cut, such as that caused in a c-section or hysterectomy.
  • Genetics, having a close relative with the disease increases risk by six-fold.
  • Transport of endometrial cells, endometrial cells transported through the lymphatic system.
  • Hormones – Endometriosis is worsened by estrogens.

What are the risk factors for endometriosis?

Anyone can develop endometriosis, but certain factors increase the risk of women. Risk factors include:

  • Never having a child
  • 30 to 40 years old
  • Period of longer than seven days
  • Menstrual cycle of 28 days or less
  • Have one or more family members with this condition

What are the common sites for endometriosis?

Endometrial growth occurs in the uterus, behind the uterus and ovaries. In addition, it can be found in the rectum, bladder, intestines and into the abdominal cavity.

What are the signs and symptoms of endometriosis?

Endometriosis symptoms depend on where endometrial tissue grows. Common symptoms and signs include:

  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Cramping abdominal
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pain when urinating
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Fatigue

How is endometriosis diagnosed?

If you have abnormal menstrual pain, pelvic pain, frequent or bowel problems, or if your pain worsens before or during menstruation, you should discuss this with your health care provider. In addition, follow-up when there is pain, as well as where has pain. Ask you the doctor about their symptoms and performing a physical examination complete. Test will involve the insertion of a small tube in the abdomen to evaluate endometrial growth (laparoscopy), ultrasound and blood tests.

How is endometriosis treated?

Treatment of endometriosis is to improve the quality of life, reduce pain, restore fertility and reduce the recurrence of the disease. Treatment options include:

  • Drugs – to relieve pain, your doctor can prescribe anti-inflammatory or analgesic agents. Oral contraceptives are used to prevent menstruation and relieve pain. A GnRH agonist prevents the ovaries to function, and estrogen is prescribed as a therapy add-back, which prevents the loss of bone mass and hot flashes.
  • Surgery – endometrial growths, lesions and scars can be removed although laparoscopy. For women with recurrent endometrial tumors, a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) is an option. It is the only way to stop permanent endometrial growth in the ovaries and the uterus.
  • Fertility treatments – women with endometriosis may become pregnant through in vitro fertilization (IVF).
  • Measures connectivity choices – these include treatment of chiropractic, acupuncture, and herbal products.
